Whether the UNIX is SCO, System V, or some other UNIX variant, there are usually a number of problems to overcome:
- the server contains hardware that is both old and specialized
- the specifications (exact purpose) of this server are missing
- the source code is unavailable
- the original person who supported it is long gone
- drivers are custom-built for an old kernel which is no longer distributed
- the operating system is based on UNIX and all internal tech support staff is skilled in Windows
- the server may not have a functioning ethernet card, and furthermore, the kernel is so old that it might not support modern ethernet cards
- some critical system depends on the proper functioning of this server
- Solve printer problems on SCO OpenServer
- Update routing and IP addresses on SCO
- Troubleshoot old legacy software
- Troubleshoot database problems, including Sybase databases
